The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is acquired through blood transfusions, contact with infected blood (sharing needles), contact with infected fluids such as semen and vaginal fluids, through breast milk and from mother to child during birth. HIV infects T helper cells (CD4), which are white blood cells, that over time decrease in number. This increases the risk of opportunistic infections and cancers. When a foreign virus, called an antigen, enters the body the CD4 T helper cells recognize it as a foreign invader and mount an immune response to destroy it. CD4 cells lead the attack against infections. Another type of cell, CD8, called suppressors end the immune response, and they also help kill cancer cells.
